The 7 Deadly Sins of Airport Travel
10 Tips for Taking Jaw-Dropping Travel Photos
5 Fabulous New Ships
Top 10 American Trips
My colleagues at Brownell Travel are always coming up with time- and season-appropriate content for their blog, and this one comes just in time for Summer Travel, which is shaping up to be one for the record books!
Experts predict record breaking numbers of summer travelers this year. That, combined with long wait times at security, can result in quite the headache for travelers. But savvy travelers know how to avoid losing their cool: get the airport early, keep identification and travel documents easily accessible, follow the rules (don’t leave a bottle of water in your purse!), and relax and be gracious. Follow their lead, and don’t fall prey to the seven deadly sins of airport travel.
PRIDE
No one cares how expensive your shoes are. Don’t hold up the security line by trying to sneak them through or refusing to take them off. Humble yourself in front of the TSA gods and comply with the rules – they aren’t going to make exceptions for you. (And pack little socks to wear if you are truly repulsed by walking barefoot through security…it’s just that simple.)
GREED
Air travel these days can be downright exhausting – and not just for you. So when you are waiting at your gate, don’t take up an extra seat (or two) with your carry-on or purse. When it starts getting crowded, move your items so others can sit down. This goes for the flight itself as well. Don’t bring so many bags that they crowd your seat mate’s precious legroom or take up the entire overhead bin.
LUST
Whether it’s a flight attendant, a fellow passenger, an airport employee, or any other person you meet at the airport, remember that this is not the place to practice pick-up lines. Even trying to sweet talk your way out of a sticky situation is out of line. Save that for the bar.
ENVY
Don’t stare down those travelers who breeze through security with TSA PreCheck or whisk onto their flight with an appropriately sized carry-on. No need to be green with envy – you, too, can be a smart, savvy traveler! You must learn to arrive early, not burden yourself by overpacking, and keep your cool in stressful situations. And using a travel advisor who can guide you through your trip and assist if something goes bump will make more confident as you breeze through the terminal, knowing someone’s got you back.
GLUTTONY
Don’t stop at every snack spot as soon as you clear security, no matter how good the sweet smell of cinnamon rolls is wafting from Cinnabon. Find your gate and check the boarding time before you pick up a treat for the plane. No one wants to explain missing a flight because you just couldn’t resist those personal pizzas from Pizza Hut.
WRATH
When dealing with the gate agent, remember this human is typically the messenger. They did not cause the flight crew to time out, the weather to be troublesome, a mechanical delay, or whatever the issue may be. Wrath towards these individuals will get you nowhere. Be the person who is respectful and courteous and remember the saying “you catch more flies with honey!”
SLOTH
No matter how tired you may be, don’t dawdle through the airport. Rummaging through your bags for documents at the check-in counter holds up the line and is frustrating to all parties involved. Be prepared and keep the process moving quickly and efficiently. Skip snapchatting the play-by-play of the airport, and walk with a purpose. Sure, the people watching is amazing, but never stop in the middle of a hallway to take pictures or stare. Move it or lose it!

Many people take photos to document family trips, but very few do it well, including yours truly. We turned to photographer, doctor, wife, and mother extraordinaire Abnous Samford for tips. In addition to being a fabulous optometrist by day, Abnous is mother to two precious children. She shares a glimpse into their world via her carefully curated Instagram feed (go follow her now:@abnousabbey). Her beautiful photography has not only captured our attention but also the attention of nearly 40,000 Instagram followers. Below she shares tips for taking photos around the world.
I’m no photographer. I’m just a busy mom who loves to take pictures of my kids and document our adventures as a family. I use Instagram as a photo journal of sorts, since I don’t always have time to write down the funny things my kids do on a daily basis or have the desire to lug my “big” camera around when we travel. I can always pull out my iPhone, take a picture and—boom, it’s saved forever.
Here are some simple tips to get the most out of your iPhoneography:
- Always use natural light. I can’t stress this enough. Avoid using the flash at all costs. Try to get near a window or outside (when the sun is not too bright). Play with light. It makes for magical moments!
- Hold your phone as steady as possible. If you have both hands free, use them to stabilize your phone.
- Don’t rely solely on your iPhone’s autofocus to do the work. Tap on the most important part of the scene to ensure the best focus and exposure.
- Utilize the grid feature on your camera to ensure straight horizons and help with composition. Try to align your subjects (or the main focus of your photos) where the lines intersect on the grid. This is called the “rule of thirds” and draws the eye to the most interesting parts of the photograph.
- Be careful with the zoom option on your iPhone. Usually when you have to zoom in, the image will appear grainy. I try to always avoid zoom, if at all possible.
- Change your perspective. Make your shots more interesting by shooting from overhead or capturing small details. Play with scale and attempt wide angle shots. These always turn out to be some of my favorite pictures.
- Crop your photos to remove any unwanted background “noise”.
- Play with filters to give your photos a unique look. I usually edit my photos using the VSCO or Pic-Tap-Go Apps.
- Try to capture the moment without posing. If your kids are anything like mine, it’s like pulling teeth to get them to pose for a picture. I find the best shots come from just catching them having fun with friends, or doing something they love—like dressing up or playing make-believe.
- Invest in a self-timer app and get in the picture! You want them to look back on all these beautiful moments you’re capturing and know you were right there enjoying every minute with them!
When we are on vacation, I love capturing all the small details that make the trip special. But, don’t feel like you have to get a photo of every single thing you do or see. I usually snap a few shots here and there and then try to live in the moment and take time to enjoy myself.

We’re taking you across the US with these 10 All-American Trips. These spots showcase all that America has to offer, from the glaciers in Alaska to the rugged Pacific coastline to the everglades. So pack a bag, and leave your passport at home—these trips are all in our very own U. S. of A.!
1. Alaska
Often referred to as “The Last Frontier”, Alaska is truly one of America’s hidden gems. The vast, unrivaled beauty of this state must be seen in person—photos simply won’t do it justice. Whether you experience Alaska by sea on a cruise or by land, the awe-inspiring scenery and wildlife will captivate you and leave you ready to plan your return trip.
Where to Stay: Plan an Alaskan cruise with Silversea that includes a land pre- or post-cruise.
2. New Orleans
The “Big Easy” may be known for Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street, but this classic Southern city dripping with French-influence offers so much more. The cuisine and culture in New Orleans is unlike any others. Head to Magazine Street (after beignets at Café Du Monde, of course) for fabulous shopping and then dine at delicious restaurants like Galatoire’s, Commander’s Palace and Peche. For family fun, check out the Audubon Park and Zoo, Jackson Square, and The National WWII Museum.
Where to Stay: The Ritz-Carlton New Orleans
3. New York
When you think of America, you can’t help but think of New York City. The Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Central Park—the list of landmarks goes on and on. With a myriad of things to see and do the Big Apple appeals to families, girlfriend getaways, couple’s trips, and more. The restaurant scene is on point (see our restaurant list here), there are plenty of sporting events to watch, and the shopping might just be the best in the world.
Where to Stay: The Peninsula, The St. Regis, The Park Hyatt
4. Jackson Hole, WY
Combine the Old West cowboys with nature-lovers, fishing enthusiasts and billionaires and you get Jackson Hole. The rugged peaks of the Tetons jut out from the surrounding prairies, creating a photo-ready landscape wherever you are. For the adventure lover, go rafting on the Snake River in the summer or ski down some of the steep slopes in the winter. The summer also offers countless hikes, bike-riding through Teton National Park (stop at Dornan’s for pizza after your ride!), horseback riding, fly-fishing and the Jackson Hole Rodeo. And while you’re there try local cuisine, like a bison burger!
Where to Stay: The Four Seasons, Amagani
5. Nashville, TN
Nashville – home to the Grand ol’ Opry, honkytonks, and country music – is having a serious moment right now. With countless restaurants that range from fine dining to casual fare you can eat your way around Tennessee’s capital. Hot spots include Loveless Motel and Café, Arnold’s, Josephine, Margot, and Rolf & Daughters. Besides dining, tour the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, shop in the local boutiques, and explore The Parthenon. For the history buffs, visit the Hermitage, which was home to America’s 7th president Andrew Jackson. And no trip is complete without visiting the honky-tonks and karaoke bars on Broadway (and who knows—you might have a celeb sighting!).
Where to Stay: The Hutton Hotel
6. California Coast
Grab a friend and take a drive down California’s rugged coast. Whether you start in San Francisco, San Diego, or somewhere in between, a road trip down the Pacific Coast Highway showcases the beauty of the West Coast. Plan plenty of time to enjoy the sites and towns and don’t rush from one to the next. Highlights along the way include: Santa Cruz, Monterey, Half Moon Bay, Big Sur, and Santa Barbara.
Where to Stay: Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco, Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, Post Ranch Inn (in Big Sur), Belmond El Encanto (Santa Barbara), and the Beverly Hills Hotel
7. Philadelphia, PA
We can’t mention America without bringing in Philadelphia—it was where the Declaration of Independence was signed, after all. Philadelphia is a perfect spot for a domestic family getaway, especially if there is a history buff in the group. Tour Independence Hall to see where the magic happened, and don’t forget to stop by the Liberty Bell across the street (you can’t miss it!). Less than half a mile from Independence Hall is the US Mint where you can do a free self-guided tour. After all that American history, treat yourself to a Philly Cheese Steak at Pat’s or Geno’s (just don’t mess up ordering it!).
Where to stay: The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia
8. Florida Keys
For this All-American destination, we’re heading south…waaay south to the southernmost point in the United States: the Florida Keys. You can make a trip to the Keys as active (think: scuba diving, snorkeling, and fishing) or as relaxing (think: spas and lounging on the beach) as you want. In Key West, you’ll find the actual southernmost point, Ernest Hemingway’s home, and the most authentic key lime pie (for the best, we recommend having a towering slice at Blue Heaven).
Where to stay: Casa Marina (A Waldorf Astoria)
9. Charleston, SC & Savannah, GA
Just 2 hours apart, these two historic cities radiate with Southern charm. Charleston’s vibrant food scene has put it on the map. Husk, FIG, Magnolias, The Ordinary, and The Hominy Grill are all musts. There are also great antique shops to search for a hidden gem, and the historic tours are not to be missed. To the south, the Spanish moss hangs from the towering live oaks welcoming you to Savannah. Broughton Street and the nearby streets are to go-to spot for shopping (don’t miss The Paris Market!). Savannah also boasts fabulous restaurants, like B. Matthews Eatery, Back in the Day Bakery, The Olde ink House, and the Sundae Café. And a visit to the setting for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evilwouldn’t be complete without a ghost tour.
Where to Stay: Belmond Charleston Place, Andaz Savannah
10. Washington D.C
An All-American destination list wouldn’t be complete without our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. There are countless historic sites and museums to explore, so wear your walking shoes. Don’t miss the Newseum, an interactive museum covering news and journalism. In addition to history, DC has plenty of shopping in Georgetown and tasty restaurants throughout the city. Founding Farmers is a perfect .spot to fuel up at brunch before exploring the monuments and museums.
Where to Stay: The Mandarin Oriental Washington DC; The Ritz-Carlton Washington DC
